The first day at school

A child’s first day at school, be it play school, primary school or nursery is a big step, and for a smooth transition the child should be well prepared.

The basic prerequisite is talking to the child to allay his or her fears and concerns, and reassure them of their anxieties. It is imperative to explain what they will experience, what they would do, for how long the school would be. Another important activity is to ensure that the child indulges in plenty of games, role-plays and reading at home, so that the transition to school becomes easier. It is also a good idea to visit the school with the child once or twice before the classes start, so that the child is somewhat familiar with the settings and he or she is not thrust into a totally new environment.

Most schools cater to parents staying back with their children on the first day. It is however essential to establish a regular routine as soon as possible.
