One important part of parenting is making the child involved in language and literature activities. Although the child will learn the basics of language and literature in school, the parents involvement will enable the child to take a greater interest in these activities, and hence mould his or her personality in a better way.
One easy way to inculcate language and literature interest in children is to sing songs and rhymes, encouraging the child to repeat it. Likewise, story telling also plays an important part. The child should be repeatedly told the same age appropriate story, taking care to pay attention to the vocabulary, values, language, pronunciation and test the child’s imagination. Child friendly books would induce the child read on their own after some time without waiting for the parent to tell the story.
The child should also be encouraged to speak out, especially sharing their ideas, pictures, events, people and situations. Family get together are a good platform to encourage the child to speak out.
