Toddlers can be quite a handful, especially, when they reach two years and decide that they have a mind of their own. That is when it becomes important to parent them correctly and guide them so that they learn how to control their behavior and not throw tantrums at parties, malls and even, at home.
Setting the right example as a parent is the first step. If you shout and scream all the time, chances are high that your toddler will be doing the same. Instead, stay happy, positive and calm while dealing with colleagues, salespeople and other family members.
Explain politely and firmly to your toddler why a certain kind of behavior is not acceptable and will not be tolerated in the family.
Reward good behavior with smiles, praise and words. Material rewards will set the wrong precedent, so don’t rely on them to facilitate good behavior.
Timeouts and quiet time in the room will also act as deterrents as will taking away TV or playing privileges for a short while.
At the end of the day, remember that your toddler is still a baby in more ways than one. Be patient, calm and kind, things will get better.. eventually.
